Here’s an idea: What if everyone else in the world was completely incapable of doing anything right? That way, your hero would have to save the day by nature of being able to walk and chew bubblegum at the same time. ![]() But how can you be sure no one else is better suited to do the job – especially if your protagonist is the inexperienced underdog that audiences love so much? The story can’t happen if someone else swoops in to save the day. ![]() You want your heroes to be the ones tasked with solving an important problem. Today we’re looking at just a few examples. Mistakes here can damage a story nearly as badly as a flopped main character. However, that doesn’t mean authors can just do whatever they want with all those minor NPCs. ![]() Readers don’t have to remember background characters even if such characters get a name and a bit of description. ![]()
